Simple strategies to make your video interview work

The way we work—and find work—has also changed due to COVID-19. Whether we are used to working flexibly or more used to traditional ways of working, all of us are adjusting to our new environment. We are moving to digital platforms and finding ways to collaborate in a non-physical space.

The same is true for recruitment. While it seems like life was put on hold so we can focus on healing, we are also adapting to our current circumstances to make sure that life goes on.

If you have been applying for work before the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) and got an interview recently, most likely you’ve been invited for a virtual interview. Your video interview is just like a face-to-face interview in an office; the only difference is it’s done virtually. Think of it as a phone interview but with an added face factor. Sounds overwhelming? For sure! Can you ace it? Totally!

Some multinationals have embraced this practice even before the ECQ, when global management needed to interview candidates in different countries. Considering the impact of COVID-19 to the way we work, we can see virtual recruiting being the new norm.

With that in mind, here are a few tips when taking interviews online.

How to Take Video Interviews

1. Look presentable – As mentioned earlier, your video is just like your interview in an office, except that you’re doing it virtually. Dress up for the part as if you’re still going to the office. If you're wearing a corporate attire for your top but not your bottom, make sure not to stand up! Otherwise, you can go full OOTD. It’s really up to you!

2. Ask for your family’s or housemate’s cooperation – You wouldn’t want someone yelling, “Kakain na!” during your interview, right? Inform everyone in your house that you’ll be having an interview. This way, you can avoid unexpected incidents. (Although sometimes cute! Check BBC dad.)

3. Technical: Check these!

Internet connection – Ensure that your internet connection is stable. This is an important call, so if you can, request the people in your home to free up some bandwidth during your interview. Tell them to work on their ML ranks later! Avoid lags by limiting video streaming and downloading during this time.

Lighting and background – Make sure your interviewer can see you properly. Sit somewhere that’s not against the light. Whether you’re taking the call from your room or dining room table, make sure that it is clean and free from clutter. If you want to be more private and your interview is in Zoom, you can also use digital backgrounds (such as Canva’s virtual backgrounds).

Audio and video – These are essential for clarity. Check your audio and video at least an hour before your scheduled interview. Like your internet connection, ensure that these are working properly. Do a test call with your friends minutes before your interview. Aside from ensuring that it works, your friends can also help you shake off the jitters.
